The purpose of a blog is that you can talk with your friends and family. Also you post things on it that your friends and family that don't live near you can look at it and see how you are doing.
The pros are that if your family lives across the country from you and barley sees you, then they can look at the blog and see how you are doing and they can feel like they talk to you every now and then. The cons are that if you don't set it to private then anybody can look at your blog and you dont want everybody in the world looking at your blog.
I think if you set it to private, then they are safe because then only people that you know can look at your blog. They can be used as an educational tool because you can answer questions and comment on other peoples questions.
